Sedimentary evolution of lagoons along the Namibian coast reveals fluctuation in Holocene biogeographic faunal provinces, upwelling intensity and sea level

چکیده
Within the wave-dominated and high-energy depositional environment of hyper-arid Namibian coast, lagoons related saltpans represent one few regional settings in which sediments originating from both marine terrestrial sources can accumulate under sheltered conditions. This allows for an approximately continuous record mid to late Holocene coastal evolution. For this paleoenvironmental reconstruction, 26 sediment cores six (paleo-)lagoons were taken investigated along a 430 km-long latitudinal gradient. Based on 56 age determinations shell material, initial formation studied be dated back 6.0–5.3 cal kyr BP. The present different types lithoclastic assigned five sedimentary facies ranging sand spit rich material eolian dune sands evaporites. From these cores, 221 samples macrobenthic faunal have been collected determined possess 46 shallow species. Biogeographic analyses resulted identification 10 (sub-)tropical warm water species that are not part benthic fauna upwelling system. Age revealed four phases biogeographic range expansion/shift into study area, at 5.3 BP, 2.8 1.2–0.9 0.36–0.12 BP northern tropical Angola Current as well southern subtropical Agulhas Current. combination datasets with published sea-level fluctuations intensities presents apparent correlation between processes presumably additional linkage ENSO Benguela Niño variability.

Holocene paleoecology along the Blekinge coast, southeast Sweden, and implications for climate and sea-level changes
To investigate the Holocene vegetation history and shoreline displacement along the southeastern Swedish coast, two radiocarbon dated pollen, macrofossil, and mineral magnetic sequences were studied in the western Blekinge coast: Hunnemara Lake and Smygen Bay. Both pollen records show mosaic vegetation with grasslands, heaths and woodlands prior to 11,300 cal. BP. Pinus-dominated mixed forest w...
متن کاملLate Holocene Sea Temperatures along the Central California Coast
Mussel shells from central California coastal archaeological sites record changes in sea surface temperatures in the past 2000 years, Water temperatures, inferred from oxygen isotopes in the shells, were about 1°C cooler than present and stable between 2000 and 700 yr ago, Between about 700 and 500 yr ago, seasonal variation was greater than present, with extremes above and below historic level...
متن کاملHolocene sea-level changes and landscape evolution on the northern Carmel coast (Israel)
Archaeological, fluvial and morphological features are used to reconstruct sea-level changes and landscape evolution on the northern Carmel coast, Israel during the Holocene. Between 8900 BP and 7000 BP sea level lay between 35 m and 7 m below present, rising at an average rate of 12-14 mm/yr. This rate decreased to 2-4 mm/yr between 7000 BP and 4000 BP, with the sea between –7 m and present MS...
متن کاملCaspian Sea level fluctuation and Determination of Setback Line
In the past 25 years, rising of the Caspian Sea level, part of a natural treat to the sea, has inundated and destroyed many buildings and arable lands and threatened many inhabitations in coastal areas. The main reason for these damages is that the law-setback has lost its efficiency and human activities have proceeded seaward. The goal of this study is to introduce a proper setback line for th...
